Dear Juror:
Welcome to jury service in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. Our system of justice cannot function without you. Jury service is one of the most important privileges and duties of citizenship. It requires no special skills or knowledge. What it does require is an open mind, an impartial mind set, and a willingness to participate with other jurors.
The Judges in this district recognize that your participation in jury service may disrupt the routine of your daily life. It may necessitate sacrifices such as rescheduling appointments and missing work. That is a necessary part of a system of justice that relies on citizens, rather than professional Judges, to make the most important decisions in our civil and criminal cases.
I am confident the time you spend on this important task will also turn out to be a valuable learning experience. It will provide an intriguing opportunity to learn more about our system of justice and how it works. You will observe your federal court in action and participate in the democratic process.
This Court's commitment to you is to ensure your valuable time is well spent and to make your service as rewarding as possible. Thank you in advance for your service as a juror in the United States District Court.
Sincerely,
Hala Y. Jarbou
Chief Judge
